Hoff Crab (Kiwa sp.)

X-ray micro-CT scan of a Hoff crab, a species of deep-sea squat lobster. These crabs live adjacent to hydrothermal vents near Antarctica. At some sites their numbers exceed 600 per square metre. Their hairy ventral side is covered in sulphur-oxidising bacteria which are believed to provide nutrition to the crabs. This specimen was scanned to create a taxonomic description for deep-sea researchers who collected it whilst aboard the RRS James Cook,
