An Anglerfish and its Prey

By Dan Sykes

X-ray micro-CT scan of Caulophryne pelagica, a deep-sea anglerfish. This female anglerfish (blue) has swallowed a prey fish (yellow). To collect this species whole is a rare occurrence and very little is known about these anglerfish. As the only specimen of this species with prey inside it, in the world, it can tell us a lot about their diet. By micro-CT scanning it, it was possible to identify the prey species as Rouleina attrita (softskin smooth-head) using the otoliths (ear bones)..
