Unravelling a Basket-Star (Gorgonocephalus sp.)

By Charles Tambiah

It can be challenging to view many physical or biological aspects of nature, especially details that are hidden from immediate view. Revealing these hidden aspects can provide new insights to science. My science photography research and practice is about finding ways to unravel some of these hidden aspects, whether they be flora, fauna, rocks, delicate science instruments etc. I combine aspects of natural and fibre optic lighting with post-production software. By ‘painting’ with light I am able to peel back layers of science, that would otherwise be hidden in darkness. Such tools and advances in digital photography have taken visualisations to new heights. Using such a combination I can show both the surface and well as the hidden branches of this delicate basket star.
